<image:caption>Sabertooth cats and dire wolves are just a few of the Pleistocene’s most notorious predators. We study apex predators and their prey across the globe, with a focus on North America and Australia. We work on modern, historic, and fossil mammals - decoding the ecology of these mammals using morphological, geochemical, dental microwear textures, and macroecological tools. We ask interdisciplinary questions that integrate the biological and geological sciences.</image:caption>

<image:title>Predators - Currently, we are involved in a multi-institution NSF grant (PIs include Dr. Larisa DeSantis, Dr. Wendy Binder (lead), Dr. Emily Lindsey, Dr. Julie Meachen, Dr. Robin O’Keefe, and Dr. John Southon, Collaborative Research: The timing and ecology of the Late Pleistocene Megafauna at Rancho La Brea, also known as Project SABER. Our research integrates morphological data with stable isotopes, dental microwear, and radiometric dating to clarify the impacts of changing climates on the dominate taxa at Rancho La Brea (i.e., dire wolves, sabertooth cats, coyotes, bison, and horses).</image:title>

<image:title>An Arid World - Australia’s Present</image:title>
<image:caption>Modern marsupials can clarify the ecology of ancient animals by serving as a “Rosetta Stone.” Through the study of animals with observed locations and diets, we have developed methods of correlating modern climates and diets with tools like stable isotopes and dental microwear. With an understanding of living animals, we can apply these tools to fossil animals and clarify their biology and ecology. We can also clarify if and how mammals have altered their ecology in the historic and prehistoric past, allowing for more informed conservation decisions. Quokka on Rottnest Island. <image:title>An Arid World - Australia’s Past</image:title>
<image:caption>Much of our research is aimed at understanding the paleoecology of Australian marsupials from the Miocene to the present. We study the ecology of the largest pouched predator (the “marsupial lion” Thylacoleo carnifex), and why it went extinct. Reconstructing the diet of giant wombat-like animals the size of rhinos, giant kangaroos, and even thylacines and Tasmanian devils that occupied mainland Australia, we have begun to clarify the diets and behavior of these ancient prehistoric creatures and understand the profound consequences of aridification on numerous Australian marsupials, past and present. <image:title>DREAM Team Past & Present - Dr. Larisa R.G. DeSantis</image:title>
<image:caption>Vertebrate Paleontologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. DeSantis earned degrees from the University of California, Berkeley (B.S.), Yale University (M.E.M.), and the University of Florida (Ph.D.). Through the study of fossil mammals, she determines how they responded to ancient climate change, potential reasons why they went extinct, and the long-term consequences of both climate change and large animal extinctions on a diversity of plants and animals—including predators and their prey. DeSantis is the recipient of a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship in Biology, the Australasian Palaeontologist Dorothy Hill Award, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, conducts research on all continents except Antarctica, and the majority of her work is explicitly aimed at helping conservationists better understand ecosystems—past and present. When DeSantis is not in the laboratory, field, or classroom, she is involved in scientific and public outreach in her local community and as the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) Distinguished Lecturer for North America and member-at-large of the Executive Committee. DeSantis has published more than 50 papers and book chapters, and her work has been featured on Curiosity Stream (Saber-tooth Brawl, Lucha Entre Dientes de Sable, Top Science Stories of 2019), National Geographic Wild (Future Cats), the History Channel (UnXplained), the Discovery Channel, radio shows, and has received global news coverage. <image:title>DREAM Team Past & Present - Anna Reside</image:title>
<image:caption>Anna Reside joined the DREAM Lab as a high school student as part of the Vanderbilt School for Science and Math. Her research qualified her as a semi-finalist for the prestigious Siemens competition (one of only five in the state of Tennessee). After her freshman year at Yale, she returned over the summer to continue work on kangaroos and a separate project on Tasmanian devils, which she later presented at the Geological Society of America in 2018. She has earned co-authorship on a paper in preparation for submission, and is first author on a paper in review at the Journal of Mammalogy.</image:caption>
